The Songle SMI-05VDC-SL-2C is a miniature electromechanical relay from the SMI series, designed for direct mounting on a printed circuit board (PCB). The ‘2C’ in the name signifies a DPDT (Double Pole Double Throw) configuration, meaning it has two independent changeover contacts, each with a common (COM), normally closed (NC), and normally open (NO) terminal, resulting in 8 pins for connection. The coil operates on 5V DC, allowing direct control from Arduino or ESP32 via an appropriate transistor circuit.

The contacts can handle up to 5A at 250VAC or 30VDC, suitable for most household and hobby applications, including small heaters, motors, and lighting. Never control the relay coil directly from a microcontroller’s digital pin, as the current is too high and can damage the microcontroller. Always use an NPN transistor (e.g., BC547 or 2N2222) as a switch for the coil. Additionally, it is crucial to add a protective (flyback) diode (e.g., 1N4007) in parallel with the coil. Without it, the inductive voltage spike generated when the coil is de-energized will eventually damage the transistor or even the microcontroller. For a simpler solution, consider using a pre-built relay module that integrates all necessary components (transistor, diode, and resistor) on a single PCB, requiring only signal, power, and load connections.
